Gül (Roza) Hastalığı

Rosacea

A chronic skin disorder starting with blushing and burning attacks involving especially the midsection of the face such as nose, jaw, forehead and cheeks, then causing pimples, permanent redness, increase in capillary vessels and edema on the skin.

What Are The Factors Causing Rosacea?

The reason of rosacea is not fully known. Accused ones are; genetic susceptibility, infectious causes, ultraviolet light, heat changes in the environment and many other environmental factors along with psychological stress.

What Are The Clinical Characteristics of Rosacea and How To Diagnose?

Mostly seen in light-skinned, colored-eyed adults between their 30s and 60s. While it’s seen more often in women it progresses more severe in men. It has four clinical phases;
phase: Occurence of recurring burning and redness attacks on the face,
phase: Redness at the middle of the face becoming permanent, emerging of visible small blood vessels on the nose and cheeks,
phase: Redness on the face becoming darker and permanent, emerging of small, red pocks and inflammatory pimples on the nose, cheeks, forehead and jaw,
phase: Burning and constant sensitivity in the eyes (rosacea in the eyes) and/or occurring of a red, swelling nose (rhinophyma).
Diagnosis is often made according to clinical findings. But a biopsy may be needed to distinguish it from some other mistaken diseases. There are no laboratory finding specific to rosacea

What Are The Factors Worsening The Clinical Signs of Rosacea?

  1. Foods and drinks (hot and cold drinks and foods like soup, tea-coffee, spicy foods, hot, pickle, chocolate, alcohol…)
  2. Weather conditions (sun light, hot weather, cold weather, humidity, wind)
  3. Psychological stress and excessive exercise
  4. Bath, cleaning and personal care products (hot bath and cleaning materials irritating the face, cologne, tonic, rose water, wet wipe)
  5. Medicines (Long use of topical corticosteroid on the face)
  6. Systemic conditions (pre-menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, severe cough and constipation)

How To Treat Rosacea?

Although it’s difficult to fully cure the rosacea, it’s possible to take it under control with treatment. Most importantly, factors worsening the clinical signs should be avoided, a sun protector should be used, cigarettes and other tobacco products should be avoided. According to the severity of the disease, there are some antibiotic treatments, creams, anti-inflammatory drugs, laser treatments, cosmetic products or some surgical methods that are involved at the last phase.
